Kumamoto 2026 earthquake relief
Overview
Following the July 28, 2026 Kumamoto earthquake, local officials first issued disaster-damage certificates and arranged emergency water, waste disposal and school closures. Mashiki town issued public notices regarding these services and the status of municipal facilities between July 30 and August 4. To assist with administrative tasks, Shiga Prefecture announced the deployment of officials to Udo City and the Yatsushiro health-office jurisdiction to aid in certificate issuance.
On August 5, relief measures expanded to hygiene and water security. JA Group Saga delivered 12,000 bottles of drinking water to Hikawa town. Simultaneously, volunteers from Hiroshima installed Sambore portable water-purification units in Uki and Yatsushiro; each unit can treat up to 20 tonnes of water per day. To address sanitation, dozens of onsen and public bathhouses in Ashikita, Minamiosaki, Kikuchi and other towns opened free of charge, serving roughly 1,500 residents on the first day. The Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force’s transport ship Kunisaki also deployed mobile bathing and laundry stations at Yatsushiro Port.
Housing assistance also grew through the Super Hotel chain, which launched a senior-focused program providing up to seven free nights for residents aged 65 and older at its Kyushu locations through early January 2027. These steps illustrate a shift from administrative support and water delivery to broader public-health and housing assistance as the relief effort matures.
