Kumamoto Prefecture unveils reconstruction plan following earthquake

Kumamoto Prefecture has released a draft reconstruction plan as the region approaches the three-month mark since the Kumamoto earthquake. The plan focuses on two primary pillars: minimizing pain by accelerating the reconstruction of housing and livelihoods, and pursuing “creative reconstruction” for the affected areas.

Governor Taketoshi Kimura emphasized the need for concrete projects to serve as a “light of hope” for disaster victims. Key priorities include strengthening disaster countermeasures by attracting a local branch of the Disaster Management Agency and promoting new tsunami prevention measures.

Simultaneously, political groups have engaged in negotiations with the national government to address critical infrastructure failures. Demands include the reconstruction of Kumamoto Minami Hospital in Uki City to restore regional medical services and urgent support for residents in Yatsushiro facing prolonged water shortages due to contaminated or severed wells.
