Kumamoto transport fares halved for touch payment users

A group of transportation operators and private companies has launched the ‘Kumamoto Support Project’ to stimulate regional economic recovery and movement within Kumamoto Prefecture. Starting October 29, passengers using touch payment methods—including credit, debit, and prepaid cards via Visa, Mastercard, JCB, American Express, Diners Club, Discover, and UnionPay, as well as smartphones and wearables—will receive a 50% discount on fares.

The initiative covers most bus routes, the Kumamoto City Tram, Kumamoto Electric Railway, and the Minamiaso Railway. No prior registration is required; the discount is automatically applied when the compatible device is tapped at the terminal during boarding and alighting.

The project aims to lower travel barriers for residents and tourists to revitalize local areas following the impacts of the ‘Reiwa 8 Kumamoto Earthquake.’ Additionally, the campaign serves as a precursor to a new common commuter pass service utilizing touch payment technology scheduled for April 2027, helping users become familiar with the new infrastructure.
