Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly prioritizes disability access in new infrastructure

Richard Ofori Agyemang Boadi, Chief Executive of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), has acknowledged that much of the metropolis's public infrastructure lacks disability accessibility. He noted that many existing buildings, including the KMA complex and his own office, were constructed before the passage of Ghana’s Disability Act and were not designed for persons with disabilities (PWDs).

To address this, Boadi stated that the KMA is strictly enforcing the Persons with Disability Act, 2006 (Act 715) for all new developments. Building permit approvals for public-serving structures are now contingent upon the inclusion of ramps and accessible channels.

The Assembly has also included 18 projects in its 2027 development plan to improve inclusivity. These initiatives involve renovating parks and community centers, including the demolition and reconstruction of stages to accommodate PWDs. The renovation of the Prempeh Assembly Hall to ensure accessibility has specifically been included in the budget.
