Disability rights and accessibility initiatives in Ghana

Overview

In Ghana, government and local authorities are implementing measures to improve accessibility and support for persons with disabilities (PWDs).

President John Dramani Mahama announced a pilot program to import rechargeable electric wheelchairs for distribution via the National Council on Persons with Disability. To support disability rights, the administration plans to amend the 2006 Persons with Disability Act and has increased the allocation for PWDs within the District Assemblies Common Fund from three per cent to five per cent.

At the local level, the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) is addressing infrastructure gaps. Chief Executive Richard Ofori Agyemang Boadi stated that new building permit approvals for public-serving structures are now contingent upon the inclusion of ramps and accessible channels. The KMA’s 2027 development plan includes 18 projects aimed at improving inclusivity, such as renovating parks, community centers, and the Prempeh Assembly Hall to ensure accessibility.
