Meta appoints Kunal Shah as WhatsApp head with $900M CRED investment

Meta Platforms invested $900 million for a roughly 20% stake in Indian fintech CRED, valuing the company at about $4.5 billion. As part of the deal, CRED founder Kunal Shah will step down as CEO and become the Global Head of WhatsApp, replacing Will Cathcart. Shah will retain his minority shareholding while leading WhatsApp’s push to become a payments‑centric super‑app, adding commerce and AI services, especially in India – WhatsApp’s largest market with over 500 million users.

Shah’s background includes founding the mobile recharge platform FreeCharge and building CRED into a fintech with 17 million monthly users that processes more than 40% of India’s credit‑card bill payments. Meta sees the move as a way to unlock new revenue beyond advertising. Chief Product Officer Chris Cox said Shah has “an intuitive grasp of the immense, global product potential for WhatsApp,” and Mark Zuckerberg called him a “builder” who will help run the world’s biggest messaging app. The appointment also signals Meta’s broader ambition to deepen commerce and financial‑service offerings across emerging markets such as Brazil and Indonesia, while navigating regulatory scrutiny in India.
