Meta invests $900M in CRED, appoints Kunal Shah as WhatsApp

Overview

In late June 2026 Meta disclosed a $900 million minority investment in Bangalore‑based fintech CRED, taking roughly 20 % of the company and valuing it at about $4.5 billion. The round included $500 million of primary capital for CRED’s growth and $400 million of secondary sales that let early investors and employees cash out.

At the same time, CRED founder‑CEO Kunal Shah left the startup to become Meta’s global head of WhatsApp, succeeding Will Cathcart. Shah will retain his CRED stake and operate from Meta’s headquarters in California. His track record – building FreeCharge and scaling CRED to around 17 million monthly users and handling more than 40 % of India’s credit‑card bill payments – is seen as a way to broaden WhatsApp’s payments‑centric super‑app vision in markets such as India, Brazil and Indonesia.

Meta executives praised Shah as a “builder” with a strong sense of product potential for WhatsApp, and noted the need to manage heightened regulatory scrutiny in India as the platform expands its commerce and financial‑service offerings. Interim CEO Miten Sampat will run CRED during the transition.

Following the announcement, Shah spoke at the Groww India Investor Festival 2026, urging young professionals to accelerate learning, adapt quickly to AI‑driven changes and view their peer group as “stocks” whose growth rates affect their own. An earlier video of Shah warning that excessive short‑form video consumption hampers wealth creation resurfaced online, sparking debate about balancing entertainment with disciplined use of technology.
