Kutná Hora discovery: Over 2,150 medieval silver coins found in field
A significant archaeological discovery has occurred in the Kutná Hora region of the Czech Republic after a farmer's plow struck a ceramic jar while tilling a field. The impact shattered the vessel, scattering its contents across the land.
While the farmer did not notice the incident, a passerby discovered the silver coins the following day and alerted authorities. Experts from the Institute of Archaeology of the Czech Academy of Sciences subsequently launched a large-scale rescue excavation at the site.
Archaeologists have recovered more than 2,150 silver coins, identified as silver denarius types. Preliminary numismatic analysis indicates the coins were minted in Prague between 1085 and 1107, during the reigns of Přemyslová dynasty rulers including King Vratislav II, Prince Břetislav II, and Prince Bořivoj II. The find is considered a major discovery that sheds light on a turbulent period of Bohemian history.
