Medieval silver coin discovery in Kutná Hora

Overview

In the Kutná Hora region of the Czech Republic, a farmer’s plow struck a ceramic jar while tilling a field, shattering the vessel and scattering its contents. A passerby discovered the items the following day and alerted authorities.

Archaeologists from the Institute of Archaeology of the Czech Academy of Sciences conducted a rescue excavation, recovering more than 2,150 silver denarius coins. Preliminary analysis indicates the coins were minted in Prague between 1085 and 1107 during the reigns of Přemyslová dynasty rulers, including King Vratislav II, Prince Břetislav II, and Prince Bořivoj II. The find is described as a major discovery regarding a turbulent period of Bohemian history.
