Kuwait proposes UN resolution supporting IAEA with 111 co-sponsors

Kuwait has submitted a draft resolution to the United Nations General Assembly regarding the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) report. The proposal has received unprecedented support, with 111 countries acting as co-sponsors.

Acting in its capacity as Chair of the IAEA Board of Governors for the 2026–2027 term, Kuwait aims to reinforce the agency’s role in maintaining international peace and security. The resolution focuses on utilizing nuclear science and technology for peaceful purposes and sustainable development goals.

Ambassador Tariq Al-Bannai, Kuwait’s Permanent Representative to the UN, stated that the draft builds upon the agency’s statute and the 1957 agreement between the IAEA and the UN. The resolution also incorporates updates from the IAEA’s 70th General Conference to reflect recent decisions and agenda items.
