Kyiv Pechersk Lavra damaged in Russian missile strike

A Russian missile and drone barrage on Kyiv on the night of 14‑15 June struck the UNESCO‑listed Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, a millennium‑old Eastern Orthodox monastery. Explosions set fire to the Dormition Cathedral, damaging about 800 sq m of its roof, and ignited a second blaze at the adjacent National Cultural, Art and Museum Complex covering roughly 1,000 sq m. The attacks killed at least four people and injured more than a dozen, while leaving around 140,000 households in northern Kyiv without electricity.

Ukrainian officials and heritage organisations, including UNESCO, condemned the strike as a crime against cultural heritage. Metropolitan Epiphanius called for prayers and labeled the assault a crime against Christianity. Russia’s defence ministry claimed it targeted facilities of the defence‑industrial complex in Kyiv. International monitors continue to assess the damage and provide assistance to protect the site’s historic structures and relics.
