Fire engulfs Kyiv's historic Pechersk Lavra monastery in Russian strike
A massive Russian missile and drone barrage hit Ukraine on the night of 15‑16 June 2026. In Kyiv the attack set fire to the roof of the Dormition Cathedral inside the UNESCO‑listed Kyiv‑Pechersk Lavra monastery, causing serious damage to the historic complex. Ukrainian officials said at least nine civilians were killed in Kyiv, including five emergency responders who died in a double‑tap strike on rescuers in Kharkiv. About 140 000 households lost electricity after power lines were hit. The strike was condemned as a crime against humanity, history and Christianity by Metropolitan Epiphanius and by UNESCO, which called the damage a loss for global cultural heritage. Russia denied hitting the monastery, attributing the blaze to a U.S.‑made Patriot air‑defence missile. Ukrainian leaders urged swift international action ahead of the upcoming G7 summit.
