Kyiv’s Pechersk Lavra monastery ablaze after Russian missile strike, six injured

Russian missile and drone attacks on Kyiv on Monday ignited a fire at the historic Kyiv Pechersk Lavra monastery, specifically the Dormition Cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The strike also damaged houses, cars and a high‑rise apartment block.

Ukrainian officials said six people were injured and the attack knocked out electricity for about 140,000 residents. Mayor Vitali Klitschko and military‑administration head Tymur Tkachenko warned citizens to take shelter as the city endured a massive missile barrage.

Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko posted images of the burning monastery, describing it as “a brutal assault on our people and our heritage”. Poland responded by placing fighter jets and air‑defence systems on heightened alert. The incident is part of a broader wave of Russian attacks across several Ukrainian regions and follows recent talks between President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin ahead of a G7 summit.
