Mbappé and Yamal lead intense media race for Ballon d'Or

Ballon d'Or 2026 Kylian Mbappé Lamine Yamal football awards media campaign

The race for the 2026 Ballon d'Or has intensified into a high-profile media battle between Real Madrid's Kylian Mbappé and Barcelona's Lamine Yamal. As the voting process nears its conclusion, both players have engaged in strategic communication to influence the 100 specialized journalists responsible for the award.

Mbappé has emphasized his individual dominance, citing his status as the all-time leading scorer in World Cup history and his prolific goal-scoring across La Liga and the Champions League. He has also made strategic efforts to connect with African voters, noting his Algerian and Cameroonian roots, a move aimed at tapping into the 20% of the vote held by the African continent.

Conversely, Lamine Yamal has argued that the award should prioritize the “magic” and unique playing style of a footballer rather than just goal statistics or team trophies. He maintains that his recent success and ability to lead his team distinguish him from other candidates.

The aggressive media campaigns have drawn mixed reactions. While some see it as necessary positioning, others, including former Ballon d'Or official Pascal Ferré and various French commentators, have warned that excessive “noise” and perceived attempts to “buy votes” could irritate voters and become counterproductive.
