2026 Ballon d'Or: Nominations announced as Mbappé leads

Overview

The 2026 Ballon d’Or nominations have been announced, with Kylian Mbappé and Lionel Messi positioned as leading contenders ahead of the October 26 ceremony in London. While social media leaks suggest Mbappé is the frontrunner, France Football has not released official results. Notable omissions from the shortlist include Cristiano Ronaldo and Raphinha.

Mbappé’s legal disputes with Paris Saint-Germain have reached a conclusion. French courts dismissed his claims regarding alleged psychological harassment, citing insufficient evidence and the player’s withdrawal of the complaint. This follows a prior labor court ruling that required PSG to pay the player nearly 61 million euros in unpaid wages and bonuses.

Regarding his physical condition, Mbappé continues to manage a left knee capsule hyperextension sustained during a UEFA Nations League match against Turkey. Despite scrutiny from Spanish media over a recent night out in Paris during his recovery, Real Madrid maintains that his activities were authorized by medical staff and manager José Mourinho to facilitate his rehabilitation, including consultations with a trusted medical specialist.

In French national team news, 2025 Ballon d’Or winner Ousmane Dembélé has faced criticism following a lackluster performance in a 1-1 draw against Italy. Commentators have noted a performance gap between his form at PSG and his impact with the national team under new manager Zinédine Zidane.
