Kyrenia ferry disaster: Nine suspects remanded in custody
The investigation into the sinking of the Filo Jet passenger ferry off the coast of Kyrenia continues, with nine suspects appearing in court for the third time. The suspects, which include the captain, crew members, and a director of the operating company Filo Denizcilik, face charges of causing death by negligence. The Kyrenia Accident Court has ordered the nine individuals to remain in custody for an additional seven days.
Police officials reported that 295 statements have been taken so far and arrest warrants have been issued for five additional individuals. Investigators have seized digital evidence, including a mobile phone belonging to the first mate and computers belonging to the company director. A key piece of evidence includes video footage sent by a missing passenger, which reportedly shows structural fractures on the vessel.
The disaster, which occurred on August 30, has resulted in 14 confirmed deaths, while 14 people remain missing. The wreckage of the high-speed ferry has been located at a depth of 554 meters. Authorities are also awaiting documentation and responses from the Istanbul-based ship classification firm Turk Loydu regarding the vessel's certification.
