Filo Jet ferry disaster investigation continues in Kyrenia
The investigation into the Filo Jet ferry disaster, which occurred off the coast of Kyrenia on August 30, continues as authorities examine new evidence. The vessel, operated by Filo Denizcilik, capsized after taking on water, resulting in 14 confirmed deaths and 14 people remaining missing. The wreck has been located at a depth of 554 meters.
During recent court proceedings in Kyrenia, nine suspects—including the company director, captain, and crew members—were ordered to remain in custody for an additional seven days. Police reported that 295 statements have been taken so far, and arrest warrants have been issued for five additional individuals. Digital evidence, including mobile phones and computers, is currently under forensic examination.
A critical piece of evidence has emerged: video footage recorded by one of the missing passengers shortly before the capsizing. The footage reportedly shows fractures on the vessel's left hull, which is being reviewed by experts to determine if the damage occurred before, during, or after the sinking. Additionally, autopsies of six recovered bodies confirmed causes of death as trauma and drowning. The ship's black box has not yet been located.
