Kyrenia shipwreck death toll rises to 15
The death toll from the Filo Jet shipwreck off the coast of Kyrenia has risen to 15 following the discovery of another body on Saturday. While the body is believed to be male, DNA testing is required for official identification.
Search operations continue within sections of the sunken catamaran using the vessel Optimus Prime. Authorities have not yet located the ship’s black box, which remains a critical piece of evidence in investigating the circumstances of the August 30 accident.
In response to the tragedy, Ünal Ostel announced new regulations to support the relatives of victims and missing persons. These measures include free legal assistance in cooperation with the Turkish Cypriot Bar Association, exemptions from court fees and stamps, and provisions for accommodation. Additionally, free public healthcare services will be provided to relatives until August 30, 2027, to ensure families can remain in Cyprus to participate in legal proceedings.
