Kyriakos Mitsotakis sets 25% threshold for New Democracy leadership
Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has signaled that his leadership of the New Democracy (ND) party may be subject to electoral results. In a recent interview, Mitsotakis suggested that if the party achieves a result below 25%, it would be justifiable for the party to seek new leadership, noting ND’s tradition of replacing leaders who do not perform well.
The 25% mark is considered a critical political threshold because falling below it would result in the loss of the parliamentary seat bonus, significantly complicating the ability to form a government. While some party members view this as a strategic move to set a low bar for success, others express concern over the potential for internal challenges and the difficulty of securing a coalition, particularly with PASOK.
Internal discussions within New Democracy are already intensifying regarding potential leadership contenders and the safety of various parliamentary candidates in different regions. Current polling suggests ND maintains a lead, but figures remain below the levels required for a single-party majority, fueling speculation about potential coalition governments or alternative leadership scenarios following the upcoming elections.
