Japan rail network faces cancellations and delays from typhoon and earthquake

JR West announced the suspension of the overnight limited‑express Sunrise Seto and Sunrise Izumo services on 25 June after Typhoon 7 approached, bringing expected heavy rain and strong winds. In Fukuoka, Nishitetsu’s Tenjin‑Ōmuta line halted operations between Hanabatake and Ōmuta on 26 June due to a catenary fault, with service expected to resume around 13:30.

A strong offshore earthquake on 25 June, recorded at Shindo 6‑strong in Aomori and Shindo 5‑weak in Miyagi, forced the Tohoku Shinkansen to stop. Service between Tokyo and Sendai resumed by 09:30, while the stretch to Shin‑Aomori was slated to restart around 13:00. Local lines also suffered delays and cancellations. The Shinkansen outage affected 44 trains and about 38 000 passengers, with an additional 35 local services suspended.

Separately, the Fukuoka meteorological office warned of severe landslide risk as rainfall accumulated up to 425 mm in some areas, prompting heightened emergency alerts across the prefecture.
