La Boquilla dam capacity falls below 23 percent

The La Boquilla dam in Mexico has fallen below 23 percent of its capacity due to a lack of widespread rainfall. This decline has caused significant concern among regional agricultural producers.

Domingo Márquez, president of the Agricultural Association, noted that while some rain conditions were recently recorded, precipitation has not been sufficient to replenish the reservoir. He warned that any additional water extraction of approximately 300 million cubic meters could drop the dam to levels as low as 11 or 12 percent, which he described as a catastrophe that would prevent the completion of the current agricultural cycle.

Márquez also addressed concerns regarding the 1944 Water Treaty, arguing that the agreement should utilize raw water rather than concessioned water. Currently, producers are awaiting official confirmation regarding any potential extraordinary water extractions.
