Overview
The La Boquilla dam in Mexico has experienced a significant decline in water levels due to insufficient rainfall. By mid-August 2026, the reservoir fell below 23 percent of its capacity, sparking concerns among agricultural producers. Domingo Márquez, president of the Agricultural Association, warned that further water extraction could drop levels to as low as 11 or 12 percent, potentially causing a “catastrophe” for the current agricultural cycle.
By late August 2026, reports indicated that La Boquilla held 647.245 million cubic meters (Mm³), or 22.74 percent of its capacity. While this level is lower than the 24.91 percent recorded in 2025, it remains higher than the 16.70 percent recorded in 2024. During this same period, the Las Vírgenes dam showed a different trend, recovering to 55.45 percent capacity.
