La Jonquera protests denounce alleged abuse of MP Isaac Padrós
Protests were held in La Jonquera in front of the National Police station to denounce alleged police abuse and linguistic discrimination against Junts MP Isaac Padrós. The demonstration, organized by the Assemblea Nacional Catalana (ANC), drew dozens to hundreds of participants who blocked the main street to demand accountability from both Catalan and Spanish government authorities.
The incident occurred on July 29 when Padrós, who is blind, visited the station with his partner to renew his minor daughter’s ID. According to reports and a complaint filed with the Girona Prosecutor's Office, the situation escalated when officers allegedly refused to recognize a fee exemption for large families, claiming documentation should have been presented at the entrance—a sign Padrós could not read due to his visual impairment.
Padrós further alleged that several officers were required to identify him and that his requests to be served in Catalan were denied, with one officer claiming not to understand the language. The ANC has characterized the event as an act of ‘catalanofòbia’ and a violation of linguistic rights.
