Alleged police discrimination against Catalan deputy

Overview

On July 29, 2026, Isaac Padrós, a blind deputy from the Junts party, filed a formal complaint with the Girona Provincial Prosecutor regarding an incident at the Jonquera police station. Padrós alleged that National Police officers treated him, his wife, and their minor daughter in a “hostile, humiliating and discriminatory manner” during a DNI renewal process.

The complaint detailed several grievances, including the refusal of a Catalan-language translator, the denial of a fee exemption for large families, and the physical seizure of identification documents. Padrós also stated that officers forced the family to speak Spanish and subsequently filed a false report against him.

Following these allegations, the Assemblea Nacional Catalana (ANC) organized protests in La Jonquera. Demonstrators gathered in front of the National Police station to demand accountability from Spanish and Catalan authorities. The ANC characterized the incident as an act of ‘catalanofòbia’ and a violation of linguistic rights.
