La Libertad expands water storage infrastructure for agriculture

In the La Libertad region of Peru, the Regional Government is expanding its water harvesting and storage strategy to support family farming. The initiative involves the installation of geomembranes in existing reservoirs across the provinces of Virú, Sánchez Carrión, and Otuzco to optimize water availability for crops such as avocado, potato, corn, and legumes.

To date, the region has executed 10,565 reservoirs with a combined capacity of approximately 2.21 million cubic meters. Additionally, 46 'qochas' (small lagoons) across the Tablachaca, Huamanzaña-Virú, Moche, and Chicama river basins provide an extra 5 million cubic meters of storage. The regional strategy also includes 6,496 hectares of forest areas dedicated to water resource conservation and regulation.
