La Libertad population exceeds 2 million, becomes Peru's third most populous department
According to the 2025 National Censuses presented by the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI), the La Libertad department has reached a population of 2,056,445 inhabitants. This makes it the third most populous department in Peru, following Lima and Piura, accounting for 6.0% of the national population.
Demographic data indicates that 50.9% of the population is female and 49.1% is male. The most populated districts are Trujillo, La Esperanza, and El Porvenir. The census data is intended to assist regional and local authorities in allocating resources for health, education, sanitation, and citizen security.
In a separate regional development, deputies representing La Libertad met in Trujillo to discuss civil defense and prevention strategies regarding the potential impacts of the El Niño phenomenon. The legislators also discussed the possibility of forming a regional caucus to prioritize local issues over political differences.
