La Libertad reports lower homicide count amid rising extortion and explosive attacks

The regional security report for La Libertad shows 122 homicides recorded between January and June 2026, a decrease from 144 in the same period of 2025. Extortion complaints totaled 1,011 in the first half of the year, down from 1,832 the previous year, though another official source recorded 1,359 complaints from January to May. The region also logged 118 explosive attacks, fewer than the 188 incidents reported in the first half of 2025, including a bomb at the Dalí discotheque that injured 47 people and another device placed near parked cars in Trujillo.

Police operations continued to target organized crime. In Quiruvilca, authorities seized more than 5,200 dynamite cartridges and 500 fuses, valued at roughly S/200,000, along with two suspects—a 22‑year‑old and a 15‑year‑old—who are alleged members of the “Los Elegantes de Quiruvilca II” group linked to illegal mining. The seized material was handed to the Public Ministry for further investigation, part of broader efforts to curb the supply of explosives used by criminal networks.
