La Marjal park wins European New Bauhaus Award for sustainability
The La Marjal floodable urban park in Alicante has won the 2026 European New Bauhaus Award in the category of Circularity, Sustainability, and Innovation. The award, determined by popular vote, recognizes the park's water resilience model and its integration as a public and environmental space in Playa de San Juan.
Alicante Mayor Luis Barcala accepted the award in Brussels, noting that the project transforms flood risks into a sustainable urban solution. The infrastructure is designed to protect the population, reduce urban temperatures, and promote biodiversity by allowing the city to coexist with water rather than merely fighting it.
