New Bauhaus Europe awards recognition
Overview
The 2026 New Bauhaus Europe awards have recognized various projects for their integration of sustainability, innovation, and community engagement.
In Alicante, Spain, the La Marjal floodable urban park received the award in the category of Circularity, Sustainability, and Innovation. Determined by popular vote, the project was noted for its water resilience model, which aims to protect the population from flood risks while reducing urban temperatures and promoting biodiversity. Alicante Mayor Luis Barcala accepted the award in Brussels, stating the project allows the city to “coexist with water rather than merely fighting it.”
In Santa Cruz do Douro, Portugal, the Casa da Azenha project won in the ‘New Bauhaus Europe Rising Stars’ category. This project involves the transformation of a traditional family oil mill into a living laboratory.
The European Commission also granted 12 other prizes to projects across the EU, Ukraine, North Macedonia, Moldova, Japan, and Brazil. Winners received monetary prizes of up to 20,000 euros, along with coaching, mentorship, and communication packages. Other notable winners include the Big People project in Zeitz, Germany, which involves local and refugee children; Circular by Nature in Marseille, France; and the Social Impact Generator Hub in Nicosia, Cyprus.
