Enrique Angelelli’s 50th anniversary draws national leaders to La Rioja

Argentina marked the 50th anniversary of Bishop Enrique Angelelli’s 1976 murder—along with the beatos Carlos de Dios Murias, Gabriel Longueville and Wenceslao Pedernera—with a central ceremony at the Ermita "El Pastor" in Punta de los Llanos on 1 August. The event, organized by Governor Ricardo Quintela, combined a religious mass with community activities such as a lunch, a symbolic cutting of the Ruta Nacional 38 and an evening cultural fogón.

National politicians attended, including Deputy Gabriela Pedrali, who highlighted Angelelli’s universal legacy, and Deputy Máximo Kirchner, who arrived a day early for meetings. Governor Axel Kicillof of Buenos Aires declined to appear in person, sending his adviser Cristina Álvarez Rodríguez to avoid a joint photo with Kirchner. The gathering was presented as a moment of peronist unity and a platform to project political options ahead of the 2027 presidential elections.
