La Spezia Container Terminal invests 90 million euros in new equipment

La Spezia Container Terminal (LSCT) has launched the operational phase for the construction of the new Ravano Terminal. As part of a 350 million euro modernization plan by the Contship Group, LSCT has signed contracts worth 90 million euros to purchase 22 high-tech cranes and yard vehicles from a major Chinese manufacturer.

The order includes four ship-to-shore cranes and 18 yard vehicles, such as RTG and RMG cranes. These upgrades will allow the port to handle ultra-large container vessels (ULCV) with capacities up to 24,000 TEU and facilitate the simultaneous processing of three such ships. The new equipment will feature advanced technologies, including OCR container identification and digital truck monitoring.

In line with decarbonization strategies, the fleet will include fully electric, cabinless remote-controlled yard vehicles, marking the introduction of the first zero-emission RTGs at LSCT. Additionally, two RMG cranes will be assigned to the future Ravano Terminal railway park to strengthen rail freight synergy.
