European port terminal infrastructure upgrades

Overview

Major European container terminals are undergoing infrastructure upgrades to increase capacity for ultra-large vessels and improve efficiency.

In La Spezia, Italy, the La Spezia Container Terminal (LSCT) has initiated the operational phase for the construction of the new Ravano Terminal. As part of a 350 million euro modernization plan by the Contship Group, LSCT signed 90 million euro contracts to acquire 22 high-tech cranes and yard vehicles from a Chinese manufacturer. This equipment, including four ship-to-shore cranes and 18 yard vehicles, is designed to handle vessels with capacities up to 24,000 TEU. The upgrade includes a transition toward decarbonization through the use of fully electric, cabinless remote-controlled yard vehicles and enhanced rail freight synergy.

In Barcelona, Spain, Hutchison Ports BEST has commissioned two new Ship-to-Shore cranes manufactured by ZPMC. These cranes feature a unique goose neck design and are capable of handling vessels up to 26 rows wide, bringing the terminal’s total to 15 Super Post-Panamax cranes.
