Los Angeles 2028 Olympics projected to generate $40.6 billion
An economic analysis by the Los Angeles County Economic Development Corporation (LAEDC) indicates that the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games could generate between $20.5 billion and $40.6 billion in economic activity. The study, commissioned by the organizing body LA28, suggests the event could support between 126,000 and 224,000 jobs across the greater Los Angeles metropolitan area, spanning five counties.
Key drivers of this economic impact include approximately $8.35 billion in infrastructure investments focused on transportation, airports, mobility, and venue improvements. The Games are expected to attract roughly 2 million visitors, potentially generating between $1.6 billion and $4.3 billion in direct tourist spending within Los Angeles County. Additionally, the event is projected to produce between $5.1 billion and $5.9 billion in combined federal, state, and local tax revenue.
Unlike previous host cities, Los Angeles plans to utilize existing stadiums and facilities rather than constructing new permanent venues. This strategy aims to direct resources toward long-term regional infrastructure projects, such as the Metro Los Angeles ‘28 by 28’ program and airport upgrades. LA28 CEO Reynold Hoover noted that the economic benefits are intended to support local businesses and strengthen communities well beyond the conclusion of the sporting events.
