LA28 Olympic and Paralympic Games preparations
Overview
Organizers of the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic and Paralympic Games are focusing on both social impact and economic growth. The Paralympic movement aims to reach a “higher position as a sport movement” by building on the engagement levels seen during the 2024 Paris Games.
An analysis by the Los Angeles County Economic Development Corporation (LAEDC) suggests the event could generate between $20.5 billion and $40.6 billion in economic activity. This impact is expected to support between 126,000 and 224,000 jobs across five counties and produce between $5.1 billion and $5.9 billion in combined federal, state, and local tax revenue.
A key driver of this impact is approximately $8.35 billion in infrastructure investments targeting transportation, airports, mobility, and venue improvements. Unlike previous host cities, Los Angeles intends to utilize existing stadiums and facilities rather than constructing new permanent venues. This strategy aims to direct resources toward long-term regional projects, such as the Metro Los Angeles ‘28 by 28’ program and airport upgrades.
The Games are expected to attract roughly 2 million visitors, potentially generating between $1.6 billion and $4.3 billion in direct tourist spending within Los Angeles County. LA28 CEO Reynold Hoover noted that these economic benefits are intended to support local businesses and strengthen communities well beyond the conclusion of the sporting events.
