Labor unions negotiate wage increases in Netherlands and Suriname

Labor negotiations are underway in both the Netherlands and Suriname to address wage structures and professional retention in essential sectors.

In the Netherlands, the Landelijke Vereniging van Artsen in Dienstverband (LAD) has begun talks with SBOH regarding a new collective labor agreement. The LAD is advocating for structural salary increases, improved compensation for extramural specialists, and better work-life balance measures. Negotiators highlighted that current physician shortages are exacerbated by uncompetitive working conditions, which influence the career choices of medical trainees.

In Suriname, education unions are negotiating a new wage structure intended to be inflation-resistant. FOLS chairperson Bernice Barron has emphasized the need to return salary levels to previous standards to prevent the loss of qualified teachers to foreign markets. The discussions also include calls for improved pensions and medical benefits, as the government seeks to balance fiscal constraints with the necessity of retaining staff in education and healthcare.
