Lacul Morii Island reopens after 12 million euro renovation
Lacul Morii Island in Bucharest has officially reopened to the public following a 12 million euro modernization project. The rehabilitation, funded by European, national, and local Sector 6 resources, covers approximately 3.4 hectares, with 2.3 hectares dedicated to green spaces.
The redesigned area features pedestrian paths that descend toward the Dâmbovița water level, providing rare direct access to the river in Bucharest. The infrastructure includes pontoons for water sports, floating vegetation islands, playgrounds, relaxation zones, and modern public lighting. To support biodiversity, a new fountain was installed to oxygenate the water without disturbing local bird populations.
Interim Sector 6 Mayor Paul Moldovan noted that the project prioritized a natural character by minimizing concrete and avoiding asphalt. Bucharest Mayor Ciprian Ciucu stated that the island's transformation is part of a larger urban regeneration effort, which will eventually include a 2-kilometer linear park.
