Lacul Morii Island urban redevelopment

Overview

The Lacul Morii Island in Bucharest’s Sector 6 has officially reopened to the public following a 12 million euro modernization project. The redevelopment transformed 3.4 hectares of unused land into a recreational space, with 2.3 hectares dedicated to green space.

Funded by European, national, and local resources, the project utilized an international design competition to create amenities such as pedestrian paths that descend toward the water level, providing rare direct access to the lake. Infrastructure includes pontoons for non-motorized water sports like kayaking and canoeing, floating vegetation islands, playgrounds, relaxation zones, and modern public lighting. To support biodiversity, a new fountain was installed to oxygenate the water without disturbing local bird populations.

The reopening was marked on September 18, 2026, by a sunset symphonic concert by the Bucharest Symphony Orchestra. Interim Sector 6 Mayor Paul Moldovan noted that the project prioritized a natural character by minimizing the use of concrete and asphalt. Bucharest Mayor Ciprian Ciucu stated that the island's transformation is part of a larger urban regeneration effort, which is intended to eventually include a 2-kilometer linear park.
