Lacul Morii Island reopens in Bucharest with symphonic concert
The Lacul Morii Island in Bucharest's Sector 6 is scheduled to reopen to the public on Friday, September 18, marking a significant phase of an urban regeneration project. The reopening will be celebrated with a symphonic concert by the Bucharest Symphony Orchestra at sunset in the island's central clearing.
The project, which involved an international competition for design solutions, was funded by European Union resources with a total value of 58.9 million lei. The rehabilitation transforms the area from a high bank with no water access into a recreational space covering approximately 3.4 hectares.
New amenities include floating islands, pontoons for water sports, and lush vegetation. Visitors will have direct access to the water, allowing for activities such as kayaking and canoeing using non-motorized boats. Bucharest Mayor Ciprian Ciucu noted that the site will serve as a landmark for viewing both sunrises and sunsets over the lake.
