Ladakh establishes Sankoo as eighth district and creates five new tehsils

The Ladakh administration has announced a significant administrative reorganization, including the creation of Sankoo as the Union Territory’s eighth district. Carved out of the Kargil district, Sankoo will consist of four tehsils: Sankoo, GM Pore, TSG, and Taisuru.

In addition to the new district, five new tehsils have been established to cover 31 revenue villages across five districts. These new tehsils are Aryan Valley in Sham, Sodh in Kargil, Phey in Zanskar, Thasgam in Drass, and Himya in Changthang. This expansion brings the total number of tehsils in Ladakh to 37.

Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena stated that these measures are intended to decentralize administration, bring governance closer to remote communities, and improve the delivery of public services across the region's difficult terrain. The reorganization follows several previous administrative updates implemented since Ladakh became a Union Territory in 2019.
