Ladakh Lieutenant Governor launches water reservoirs in Kargil

Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, Vinai Kumar Saxena, has laid the foundation stones for two new water reservoirs in the Sodh tehsil of Kargil district. Located at Barchay and Apati, the reservoirs are being developed under Project Him Sarovar and will have a combined storage capacity of approximately 60–70 lakh litres.

The project aims to mitigate acute water scarcity that has severely impacted local agriculture and rural livelihoods, which in some cases has led to resident migration. The initiative involves channelising nearby glacier streams to provide a more dependable water supply for both irrigation and household use.

Saxena has directed the district administration to ensure the completion of both reservoirs by the end of November. He emphasized the necessity of effective water conservation and management to protect local livelihoods and support long-term rural development.
