Ladakh administration water security initiatives

Overview

Ladakh Lieutenant Governor Vinay Kumar Saxena has initiated efforts to address local governance and resource scarcity in the region.

Following a meeting with approximately 200 Nambardars where local leaders raised concerns regarding “acute water shortages” in several villages, the administration prioritized water security. In response, Saxena laid the foundation stones for two new water reservoirs in the Sodh tehsil of Kargil district at Barchay and Apati.

Developed under Project Him Sarovar, these reservoirs aim to channelize glacier streams to provide a dependable supply for irrigation and household use, targeting a combined storage capacity of 60–70 lakh litres. The project is intended to mitigate water scarcity that has impacted agriculture and contributed to resident migration. The Lieutenant Governor has directed the district administration to complete the reservoirs by the end of November.
