Ladakh to host High Court bench following presidential regulation
President Droupadi Murmu has promulgated the Union Territory of Ladakh (Sitting of Bench of the High Court of Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh in Ladakh) Regulation, 2026. This regulation, issued on August 27, 2026, enables the High Court of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh to hold sittings within the Union Territory of Ladakh.
Exercising powers under Article 240 of the Constitution and the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019, the regulation provides a legal framework for a bench to sit in Ladakh. The Chief Justice, with approval from the Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, may appoint specific locations for these sittings. While the regulation facilitates local access to justice, the principal seat of the High Court remains unchanged.
The Chief Justice also retains the discretion to direct that certain cases arising in Ladakh be heard in Srinagar or Jammu. The regulation will come into force on a date to be officially notified by the Administrator of Ladakh.
