Brazil intensifies breastfeeding support and awareness via Agosto Dourado

Brazil is conducting various public health initiatives focused on breastfeeding and maternal support, largely aligned with the ‘Agosto Dourado’ (Golden August) awareness campaign. In Paraná, over 13,000 liters of human milk were collected during the first half of the year. In the Federal District, a network of 14 milk banks and six collection points provides support for families and facilitates donations for premature infants.

National data indicates that exclusive breastfeeding among infants aged 0 to six months monitored by the Unified Health System (SUS) reached 57% in 2025, with partial 2026 data showing a slight increase to 59%. This progress moves toward the World Health Organization's goal of 60% by 2030. However, national studies like ENANI-2019 show the broader Brazilian rate for exclusive breastfeeding is approximately 45.8%.

Local municipalities are also active: Curitiba celebrated 19 years of the ‘Mama Nenê’ program, which ensures all municipal early childhood education centers have dedicated breastfeeding spaces. Other regional efforts include educational symposiums, community outreach in Macuco, and specialized support for pregnant women to promote humanized care and combat misinformation regarding breastfeeding.
