Lagoa dos Patos Flood Peaks Then Recedes in Rio Grande, Brazil
The water level in the Lagoa dos Patos lagoon in Rio Grande, Brazil, rose above the flood threshold of 80 cm during the early hours of Monday, reaching a peak of 88.2 cm at 00:30. By mid‑morning the level had fallen, measuring 69.8 cm at 08:30, well below the critical mark.
Civil Defense officials said the surge was driven by heavy rains that fell days earlier in the northern and central parts of Rio Grande do Sul, with water taking up to ten days to travel through the basin. Winds from the northeast also contributed to the rise. The agency continues to monitor vulnerable areas as the water recedes.
