Lagoa dos Patos flooding in Brazil

Overview

The Lagoa dos Patos lagoon in southern Brazil experienced fluctuating water levels due to heavy rains and wind. In early August, water levels in Rio Grande peaked at 88.2 cm, exceeding the 80 cm flood threshold, before receding to 69.8 cm by mid-morning.

By mid-August, the situation escalated as water levels in Rio Grande reached 109.7 cm, nearly 30 cm above the established flood mark. While levels showed some fluctuation, authorities remained on alert due to projections suggesting further rises. In São Lourenço do Sul, municipal authorities initiated emergency structural interventions, including the construction of earth embankments to protect the Praia das Nereidas waterfront and reinforced containment works near Arroio Carahá to prevent urban flooding.
