Lagoa dos Patos water levels exceed flood thresholds in Brazil
The water level of Lagoa dos Patos has exceeded flood thresholds in southern Brazil, prompting emergency responses in several municipalities. In Rio Grande, water levels reached 109.7 centimeters, nearly 30 centimeters above the established flood mark. While levels showed some fluctuation and minor recession in recent hours, authorities remain on alert as projections from the Interinstitutional Center for Observation and Forecasting of Extreme Events (CIEX/FURG) suggest water levels could continue to rise.
In São Lourenço do Sul, municipal authorities have initiated emergency structural interventions to protect the Praia das Nereidas waterfront. This includes the construction of earth embankments (taludes) to block the lagoon from advancing onto the sand and boardwalk, as well as reinforced containment works near Arroio Carahá. Local officials state that while these measures are preventative and the current situation is under control, continuous monitoring is being conducted to prevent urban flooding.
