Lagos airport rail project financing reaches advanced stage

Discussions regarding the financing for the extension of the Lagos Red Line rail to Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) have reached an advanced stage. The project is a collaborative effort between the Nigerian Federal Government and the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN).

According to FAAN Managing Director Olubunmi Onabanjo-Kuku, the proposed rail link aims to connect the airport’s three passenger terminals and cargo facilities to the existing Red Line via five internal stops. This infrastructure is intended to improve accessibility and modernize the transport links for Nigeria’s busiest airport.

In addition to the rail project, FAAN is working on a broader modernization of MMIA to improve operational efficiency and passenger experience through updated technology and infrastructure. Onabanjo-Kuku noted that Lagos handles 68 percent of Nigeria’s air traffic, while Lagos, Abuja, and Kano collectively manage approximately 80 percent of the nation's passenger traffic.
