Lagos airport infrastructure and rail expansion

Overview

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) and the Lagos State Government are developing infrastructure projects at Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) to enhance connectivity and passenger experience.

A central component of these efforts is the extension of the Lagos Rail Mass Transit (LRMT) Red Line directly into the airport. Financing discussions for this extension have reached an advanced stage through collaboration between the Nigerian Federal Government and FAAN.

Recent developments include the approval of a monorail design intended to connect the Ikeja Railway Station to MMIA. Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development Festus Keyamo announced that the approved design features five planned stations: Ikeja Station, Domestic Airport Station, Beesam Station, Toll Gate Station, and the MMIA Airport Station. This monorail is intended to provide an alternative to congested road routes by linking the terminus of the Lagos Red Line to the airport.

The monorail will serve Terminal 1, which is currently undergoing a comprehensive reconstruction and modernization program to improve passenger processing, immigration, and customs facilities. Broader modernization efforts at MMIA also include structural facade improvements and the implementation of updated baggage handling and check-in technologies. FAAN Managing Director Olubunmi Onabanjo-Kuku noted that Lagos handles 68 percent of Nigeria’s air traffic.
