Lagos implements waste-to-wealth initiatives and improves dumping enforcement

The Lagos State Government is advancing initiatives to improve waste management and environmental sanitation through both enforcement and resource recovery.

Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, Managing Director of the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), has called for increased public documentation of illegal waste dumping. Following a video showing indiscriminate dumping in Ibeju-Lekki, Gbadegesin urged citizens and media to capture identifying details such as vehicle registration numbers and company logos to assist in investigations, while advising against direct confrontation with offenders.

Simultaneously, the Lagos State Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources is promoting a “waste-to-wealth” approach for abattoir operators. During a workshop titled “Red to Green: From Waste Disposal to Resource Recovery,” officials outlined plans to convert slaughterhouse byproducts—including blood, wastewater, and faecal matter—into biogas and organic fertiliser. This initiative aims to mitigate pollution, blocked drainage, and public health risks associated with improper abattoir waste disposal.
