Lagos waste management crisis and regulatory response

Overview

The crisis, which began with a July 2026 protest by informal waste collectors over the destruction of recyclable material, has escalated. Residents in Surulere and other districts continued to report weeks‑old refuse piles, foul odours, blocked drainage and heightened flood and disease risk. LAWMA Managing Director Dr Muyiwa Gbadegesin attributed the delays to rapid population growth and recent flooding, and pledged new compactor trucks, additional disposal facilities and material‑recovery plants in Badagry to be operational within six to eight months. Regulatory enforcement has intensified. LAWMA sealed shops and markets along the Tejuosho‑Ojuelegba corridor and the Ijesha Bus Stop‑Cele Under Bridge area, as well as several complexes in the Ikotun‑Igando axis, due to illegal dumping. LASEPA sealed twelve businesses in the Ijora Causeway and Apapa districts for repeated environmental violations. In the Ayobo-Ipaja axis, LAWMA has sealed Rock of Age Plaza, Ajerogun I Market, Ayobo Market, and Oba Plaza following repeated infractions. To prevent cleared sites from becoming hotspots, waste evacuation operations were conducted at Oluwaga Bus Stop and Ayobo Road. Addressing reports of indiscriminate dumping in Ibeju-Lekki, Dr. Gbadegesin commended media documentation but noted that effective enforcement requires more specific details. He urged the public to capture identifying information, such as vehicle registration numbers and company logos, to assist in tracking perpetrators, while advising citizens not to put themselves at risk during documentation. In a shift toward resource recovery, the Lagos State Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources is promoting a “waste-to-wealth” approach for abattoir operators. Through the “Red to Green: From Waste Disposal to Resource Recovery” workshop, officials outlined plans to convert slaughterhouse byproducts—including blood, wastewater, and faecal matter—into biogas and organic fertiliser to mitigate pollution and public health risks. Efforts to manage liquid waste are also expanding.
