Lagos Launches Waste‑to‑Energy Project to Combat Open Defecation

The Lateef Jakande Leadership Academy (LJLA) unveiled the "Pee‑Po‑to‑Power Lagos" waste‑to‑energy initiative, aiming to eliminate open defecation in Lagos by converting human waste into clean biogas. A 30‑cubic‑metre anaerobic biodigester was installed at a public toilet in Ojota, creating a pilot sanitation hub capable of processing waste from at least 350 users daily.

To raise public awareness, LJLA organised a 10‑kilometre walk on July 25, 2026, from Allen Junction/Avenue to the Ojota bus stop, expecting 500‑700 participants. Organisers said the walk highlighted the long distances many residents travel to reach decent toilets and promoted behavioural change toward better hygiene and environmental stewardship. The project combines modern sanitation infrastructure with a circular‑economy model, converting waste into renewable energy while improving public health and reducing pollution.
